How to Cure and Care a Cast-Iron Pot
Before first use, you must remove the wax coating on the inside of the pot
- Fill the pot halfway with soapy water and turn on burner to medium heat
- While the water is heating, before it comes to a boil, use a mesh scour pad to scrub the inside of the pot – test temperature of water before scrubbing
- After scrubbing, continue to boil for approximately 10 minutes
- Empty and rinse pot
- Fill ¼ of the pot with cooking oil
- Turn on burner and heat oil
- While oil is heating, continuously wipe down inside of pot with a brush/mop with handle over a 15-minute time period– caution, oil is hot and do not touch with hands
- Turn off burner and empty oil
- Turn on burner and reheat empty pot for 5 minutes
- Turn off burner and wipe out inside of pot with a thin coat of oil and brush
- Pot is ready for use
Note: After this procedure, never scrub pot with soap – always rinse pot after use with warm water, then repeat steps 9 and 10.
Also, wiping down the outside of pot with oil, like steps 9 and 10, is recommended on occasion. |
